I'm Thomas Reynolds, and I'm here with my wonderful co-host, Sophia Reed. Today, we're diving into the history of Mother's Day, a holiday that holds a special place in many hearts around the world. Thanks, Thomas. It's such a meaningful day for so many, and it's interesting how its origins are both ancient and modern. I can't wait to get into it. Absolutely. Let's start with the basics. Mother's Day is a celebration honoring mothers, motherhood, and the influence of mothers in society. But did you know it has roots in the British Isles with Mothering Sunday? Right. Mothering Sunday was celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent, and it involved visiting one's Mother Church. It's fascinating how these traditions evolved into what we celebrate today. Indeed, the modern version of Mother's Day that we know in the United States began in the early 20th century, thanks to the efforts of Anna Jarvis. She organized the first official Mother's Day service at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, in 1908. Anna Jarvis' story is so compelling. She wanted to honor her mother, Anne Reeves Jarvis, who was a peace activist. It's touching how a personal tribute grew into a national holiday. It really is. Anna Jarvis' campaign to make Mother's Day a recognized holiday in the U.S. began in 1905, the year her mother passed away. By 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed it a national holiday. But it's interesting that Anna Jarvis later became critical of how commercialized the holiday became. She envisioned it as a day of sentiment and gratitude, not profit. Exactly. She even organized boycotts against companies that commercialized it. Her vision was for people to honor their mothers with handwritten letters, not just buying gifts and cards. Now Mother's Day is celebrated on various dates around the world. In some places, it's tied to religious or historical events. For instance, in Bolivia, it's commemorated on May 27th to honor women who fought in a battle during the country's War of Independence. And in some countries, it's celebrated alongside International Women's Day. It's amazing how one concept can have so many variations globally. Speaking of variations, let's bring in our guest today. Emma Blackwell, a new mom of twins, is here to share how she plans to celebrate her first Mother's Day as a mom. Welcome, Emma. Hi, Thomas and Sophia. Thanks for having me. It's such a pleasure to be here. We're thrilled to have you. So Emma, as a new mom, how are you planning to celebrate this special day? Well, it's definitely going to be a low-key celebration this year. With twins, every day is a bit of an adventure. My partner is planning a nice breakfast in bed, and we're hoping for some quiet family time. It's all about cherishing those little moments. That sounds perfect, Emma. Sometimes the simplest celebrations are the most meaningful. Any traditions you're hoping to start with your little ones? I think we'll start a tradition of planting a flower or tree each year. it's a nice way to watch something grow and flourish, just like our family. That's a beautiful idea, Emma. Thank you for sharing your plans with us, and a very happy Mother's Day to you. Thank you so much. I appreciate it. As we wrap up today's episode, I want to take a moment to dedicate this episode to all the moms around the world. Your love, strength, and resilience are truly inspiring. Personally, I want to express my gratitude to my own mother, who has done more for me than I could ever put into words. Thank you, Mom. Beautifully said Thomas. To all the mothers out there, thank you for everything you do. Happy Mother's Day. And with that, we'll sign off. Thanks for joining us today.
